A small town of 9,400 seems to be just a small town. But Manchester has a way of acting larger than it's smallish size. Here are some of the area attractions that Manchesterians and passers by can check out most any day of the year. Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park is an ancient Indian fort that still stands today, nearly 3,000 years after it was built. Constructed at the confluence of the Duck and Little Duck rivers and right on the edge of the Highland Rim, this was an extremely effective place for one to settle in the days of the ancient Cherokee people. Visitors are greeted by a beautiful vista overlooking the Duck River and can take a relaxing, non-stressful walk around and inside the fort most any week of the year. The park also offers picnic tables and recreational oppotunities just outside the actual fort in view of the rolling Duck River. On the other end of the technological scale, Arnold Engineering Development Center is one of the nation's (if not the world's) best flight test facilities. Originally dedicated in 1951 by then President Harry Truman, AEDC (as it is called by the locals) continues to test the most state of the art aviary technology through various wind tunnels. Visitors can take a guided tour around the facility that once had offices for such great rocket scientists as Dr. Theodore von Karman and Dr. Frank Wattendorf. Visitors may even get a glimpse of a "chicken gun," or a large barrel that sends objects at an airplane in flight to simulate a collision with a bird. An excellent educational outing, AEDC can often inspire it's visitors as equipment from John Glenn's space capsule to the state of the art jets of tomorrow's military has been, and will be tested at the facility. If you are in the mood for something a little more recreational, Manchester has you covered - in more ways than one. Manchester offers its residents (and even some "not so local" patrons) use of some of the finest recreational facilities for a town its size. From tennis courts to well kept baseball and softball fields, the venues for athletic competition are something to behold. But all of that cannot cast a shadow against Manchester's newest addition, the Manchester Recreation Complex. Equipped with two indoor pools, one outdoor play pool, basketball courts, an indoor track, racketball courts, weight machines, cardiovascular exercise apparati and dance/fitness rooms, this complex draws people from not only Coffee County, but the surrounding counties and stands as one of the best facilities in southern middle Tennessee. The recreational facilities have also been improved to build a greenway which is almost fully completed and stretches along the Duck River, through playground areas, and will eventually run all of the way out to Old Stone Fort State Partk.
