Peoples Bank and Trust

People's Bank is very excited to be celebrating 100 years of service in out community. Lots of things have changed since opening our doors on that crisp October day in 1906 but our commitment to the community remains strong and providing good quality service is important because it is important to our customers. Lots of places have come and gone in the Manchester/Coffee County area but Peoples Bank & Trust Company still remains in the same location when we opened our doors in 1906. Even though we have plans to eventually relocate our main office on our new property on Hillsboro Blvd, we plan to maintain our presence on the square for the foreseeable future to continue serving our loyal customers. During out 90TH anniversary, Mrs. Cornelia Vaughn Bradshaw, a former customer and shareholder of Peoples Bank, gave an interview to the Manchester Times about her recollection of the bank's history. It was in her father's office, the Vaughn Building on Spring Street, that the charter was signed placing Mr. John P. Adams in the president's position until 1924. She remembered that in those days, her father, Dr. E. P. Vaughn got around in a horse and buggy. The late Mrs. Bradshaw recalled that her father gave her and her sister, Christine, stock in the bank. Back when she gave this interview, Mrs. Bradshaw was probably our longest term customer at age 94. Mrs Bradshaw also recalled that our 2ND president Mr. Alfred Moore May (president 1925-44) had a son-in-law by the name of Dave King. Many of you may have heard the stories of Mr. King who immigrated to the United States from Russia and became a peddler in the Cannon County area in the early part of the 20TH century. When he came to Manchester, he had very little money but invested what he had in land and went on to become one of the area's most successful realtors and auctioneers. Mr. King became our 4TH president from 1953-1986. The late Mr. Grady York and former employee of Peoples Bank mentioned how the bank had weathered difficult times in our country including the Great Depression. Most other banks closed their doors but Peoples was one of a few that remained open. In 1986, after Mr. King's health failed and was no longer able to be the president, Mr. Wayne Bramblett, a well-respected local businessman, was named president until 1988 when an accident caused him to step down. Elmer Morris took over in 1988 and continues to serve as president. Peoples Bank & Trust Co.
